Setting up the game data
What works: Quake II's baseq2/pak0.pak and baseq2/video: its CD or a BIN/CUE image of it (with the CD music), an installed copy (Steam, GOG) or GOG's installer.
- With Walnut Games (the easy way)
- With game-data-packager (a terminal, any Debian system)
- By hand (the files, where they go, their checksums)
1. With Walnut Games
In Walnut Games, open Yamagi Quake II: Install, then Add game files... The chooser lists the disc in the drive, mounted discs and USB sticks, GOG and Steam folders, and the ISOs, installers and archives in Downloads and your home folder; you can also pick a file or folder yourself. It checks every file against the checksums below and installs an ordinary package (quake2-demo-data, quake2-full-data), which Remove data takes away again.
The free demo needs no copy: choose Download the free demo in the chooser (it needs the network).
In a terminal, the same with walnut-data (part of Walnut Games):
walnut-data import yquake2 /path/to/your/copy
A source is the disc in the drive (/dev/sr0), an ISO (.iso, .img), a BIN/CUE image (the .cue, or the .bin with its .cue next to it), an Alcohol 120% image (the .mds, or the .mdf), an installer or archive (GOG's setup_*.exe) or a folder (an installed copy, Steam's or GOG's). Images are opened read-only; nothing is copied out of them that the game doesn't need.
walnut-data import -p quake2-demo-data yquake2
The free demo: downloaded whole, no source.
Add-ons, each from a copy that has it (the app shows Also add for every one the source holds):
| Package | What | Command |
|---|---|---|
quake2-music | music | walnut-data import -p quake2-music yquake2 /path/to/your/copy |
The CD's music (quake2-music): from the disc in the drive game-data-packager rips audio tracks 2 to 11 with cdparanoia; from a BIN/CUE or MDF/MDS image of the CD walnut-data encodes them to Ogg Vorbis itself (oggenc, from vorbis-tools). Ripped audio has no checksum, so the tracks are checked more loosely: the exact names, at most 64.0 MB each, Ogg Vorbis only.
With Walnut's licensed suite as an apt source, the app offers Install from Walnut licensed instead (walnut-data install-repo yquake2). walnut-data remove yquake2 takes the data away again.
Which editions work
- The demo (free): version 3.14, downloaded by game-data-packager itself (no copy or installer needed). Package
quake2-demo-data; the Quake II (demo) menu entry starts it and shows only while the demo is installed. - The full game: package
quake2-full-data. It needsbaseq2/pak0.pakand thebaseq2/videofolder of your copy: a CD, a Steamcommon/Quake 2folder, or GOG’s Quake II Quad Damage (the installed folder orsetup_quake2_quad_damage_*.exe). The import downloads the 3.20 patch (the official patch files) unless the copy already has it. - The CD’s music: package
quake2-music, optional, in/usr/share/games/quake2/baseq2/music/02.ogg..11.ogg, which Yamagi Quake II plays in place of the CD; from a BIN/CUE image of the CD or the disc in the drive. The 3.20 patch download is allowed only when every package asked for may download, so the full game and its music are two imports:walnut-data import -p quake2-full-data yquake2 /path/to/Quake2.cue, thenwalnut-data import -p quake2-music yquake2 /path/to/Quake2.cue. - The expansions (
quake2-reckoning-data,quake2-groundzero-data,quake2-zaero-data) are packages of the same tool; they have not been tried on the PS3.
What you get
The demo is installed in /usr/share/games/quake2-demo/baseq2 and the full game in /usr/share/games/quake2/baseq2; the two use different folders. The Quake II (demo) entry passes -datadir /usr/share/games/quake2-demo, and the Quake II entry (shown once baseq2/pak0.pak is there) passes -datadir /usr/share/games/quake2.
2. With game-data-packager
walnut-data runs game-data-packager, Debian's tool that makes a package out of game data: Walnut's build of it (Debian's 89 with our patches) comes with Walnut Games. Run it yourself to keep the .deb, or to make it on another computer. It writes <package>_<version>_all.deb into the folder after -d (. is the current one), one package per -p:
| Package | What | Command |
|---|---|---|
quake2-demo-data | demo | game-data-packager -d . -p quake2-demo-data quake2 |
quake2-full-data | full | game-data-packager -d . -p quake2-full-data quake2 /path/to/your/copy |
quake2-music optional | music | game-data-packager -d . --no-download -p quake2-music quake2 /path/to/your/copy |
Then install the file it made, from the same folder:
sudo apt install ./quake2-full-data_*.deb
--no-download: only your files are used. Without it game-data-packager may download the official patch files it knows (quake2-full-data); the commands above leave it out for those.quake2-demo-datais downloaded whole.- It reads a folder, an installer or an archive; it doesn't open disc images. Mount an ISO first (open it in the file manager, or
udisksctl loop-setup -r -f FILE.iso, thenudisksctl mount -b /dev/loopN) and give it the mount point, or let walnut-data do it. BIN/CUE and MDF images: walnut-data only.
3. By hand
Copy the files to the paths below as root (sudo cp), with the names exactly as written, upper and lower case included: Linux tells them apart. Where a file has several accepted versions, any one of them does. Check a copy with sha256sum FILE (sha1sum or md5sum where the table says so) and compare the sum. Files copied by hand belong to no package: Walnut Games goes by the packages, so it still shows the data as missing, and Remove data leaves them alone.
