Installation
In Walnut Games, the desktop app: Install, then Add game files... and pick your copy of Quake: the disc in the drive, an ISO, BIN/CUE or MDF image, an installer or a folder. The game data is not part of the package, and Walnut does not offer it.
What works: Quake's id1/pak0.pak and id1/pak1.pak: its CD or a BIN/CUE image of it (with the CD music), an installed copy (Steam, GOG) or GOG's installer. The 2021 re-release: GOG's Quake Enhanced installer, build 60828 (setup_quake_enhanced_1.0_(60828).exe), or that build installed (with its mission packs and episodes).
No copy? Download the free shareware in the same chooser (it needs the network).
Optional, from a copy that has them: the CD's music, 4 expansions: Also add in the app.
More ways (a terminal, game-data-packager on any Debian system, copying the files by hand): Guides.
Or from a terminal, from Walnut's apt repository:
sudo apt install quakespasm
Known issues
- The interface is tiny at 1080p: the status bar numbers and the centre messages are about 8 px high.
- A DualShock 3 plugged in by USB but not activated with the PS button makes the menu cursor run up as if a direction were held.
- A few frames take up to 0.6 s, about half a second of stutter a minute.
